Head of Product & Design

At Underline, we are driven by a singular mission: to ensure the vibrancy of our nation through building intelligent community infrastructure. We work with communities across the United States to design, finance, and construct open access fiber-optic networks. These networks are the essential foundation for ultra-fast access to information, remote work and education, a competitive market for content and services, business formation job creation,  distributed healthcare services, new wireless solutions, and resilient modernized infrastructure including responsible energy creation.

Our team marries network design and software solutions, proprietary knowledge science, scale-structured finance, and government expertise to deliver these projects. We also benefit from prominent and engaged east and west coast venture backing, and a deep bench of industry-leading partners—united by a belief in the power of this model to support the vitality of communities.

We’re looking for a collaborative, curious mid to senior-level Product Designer to help us launch our first software platform, working directly with our Head of Product and Design. This position will join the founding team and have a substantial impact on the direction of the company.

Come help us design the future of connectivity.

Does this sound like you?

  • You are always in pursuit of learning something new, whether that is a new skill or a new domain space. If you don’t know something, you will figure it out.
  • You are not just comfortable knowing what is “next”—you are excited to have a hand in figuring it out for yourself and the team at large.
  • You are a proactive, direct communicator who can express yourself clearly and efficiently no matter the medium.
  • You are as comfortable discussing technical debt with the engineers or talking legal requirements with the business team as you are communicating with the product team.
  • You are comfortable making rapid decisions without knowing all of the answers and don’t get paralyzed by the unknown.
  • You have a prototyping mindset and love to test your theories in the lowest fidelity possible, iterating your way to greatness.
  • You love bringing others into your process. You see the opportunity of working with people who have never worked with designers before as an exciting chance to showcase all that design can do.
  • You can filter through the noise to see what is important, even when a lot is going on.
  • You are no stranger to designing with data, both quantitative and qualitative. Measuring and tracking the right things is important to you.

  • Help design our first software platform.
  • Partner with product, business, and engineering to deeply understand needs and develop digital products that deliver true value to both our customers and our business.
  • Champion customer needs and promotes understanding and empathy with our customers across the company at large.
  • Develop and maintain design processes, standards, and practices that support cross-functional collaboration.
  • Develop and maintain a design system that promotes consistency and makes it easier for everyone to get on the same page.

  • You have enough experience to be able to gauge how hard a problem might be, what work needs to get done, who needs to be involved, and how long it might take. This lets you set and manage expectations for others, both above and below your role.
  • You have enough experience to move quickly to get something together that you can show and get feedback on.
  • Experience working in an early or mid-stage startup or in agile, cross-functional product development teams.
  • Experience designing products across the product lifecycle, including new product launches.
  • Experience designing for responsive web platforms.

Bonus Characteristics

  • You have experience with web development processes or better yet, you’re not afraid of the terminal and understand the complexities of CSS.
  • You have proficiency with common analytical tools to understand user behavior (such a Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Segment, etc) or experience running user research initiatives.
  • You know how to build and maintain a Figma design system.
  • You’ve worked on community-based initiatives before, either in politics, telecommunications, or civic engagement.
